New Orleans Saints Tickets - Brees Takes Top Award by Brent Warnken

Although the New Orleans Saints missed a playoff berth this season, that doesn't mean that their season is completely over. Their star quarterback, Drew Brees, was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year for her performance during the 2008 season.

Brees impressed everyone with his yardage totals, tallying 5,069 yards this season. The total puts him just 15 yards under the legendary Dan Marino's single season record. He is one of only two players to reach over 5,000 yards in a season. The win is even more miraculous considering that the Saints finished the season 8-8, far behind the teams of quarterbacks like Peyton Manning. Manning was second on the list, tied with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson with nine votes. Brees had 22 votes.

Brees hails from Purdue University, where he was a Heisman Trophy Finalist and the school's all-time leader in passing yards, total yards, completion percentages, touchdowns, completions and attempts. He was also on top of the Big Ten in the same categories and led his team to the Rose Bowl in 2000. Brees was picked up by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2001 Draft as the 32nd pick overall. His first year with the Chargers, he played on only one game with no starts.

In 2002, he started and played in every game of the season with 3,284 yards, 17 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a passer rating of 76.9. The next season, he played and started in 11 followed by 15in 2004. Also in 2004, he had 3,159 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions, a passer rating of 104.8 and his first Pro Bowl invitation. He was a Pro Bowl alternate the next season, but was also injured late in the season.

Breed came to the Saints in 2006 and started every game that year. He had one of his best seasons yardage-wise that first year, with 4,418 yards, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a passer rating of 96.2. He was also given Pro Bowl starting honors that season. Last season, Brees again started in every game with 3,423 yards, 28 touchdowns 18 interceptions and a rating of 89.4. On top of his 5,069 yards this season, Brees also had 34 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and a rating of 96.2.

The voting is from a panel of 50 broadcasters and writers who cover the NFL from around the country. Also netting votes were San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers with six, running back DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers with two, running back Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons with one and wide receiver Steve Smith of the Panthers with one.

Other AP winners were Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison for Defensive Players of the Year, Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington for Comeback Player of the Year, Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith as Coach of the Year and the Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan won the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
